Community Advocate

 

Position Details

The Community Advocate reports directly to the Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives, and works in tandem with the Director to foster Youth Represent’s systemic reform. The Community Advocate plays a lead role galvanizing youth participants to engage in policy reform work, including managing the Youth Speakers Institute.  The Community Advocate is also responsible for coordinating and delivering workshops at partnered community-based partner organizations across the five boroughs.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Engage and Develop Youth Leaders

  • Organize and execute workshops and trainings for clients on public speaking, engaging with media, civic participation, effective advocacy, and specific policy campaigns
  • Lead YR’s Youth Leadership:
    • In coordination with partner organization staff, lead regular on-site workshops on policy priorities and civic engagement on-site
    • Recruit workshop participants and YR clients to work on YR policy reform campaigns
    • Create and manage structures to maintain engagement of participants and build their leadership and advocacy skills
  • Maintain contact with YR clients, identify legal issues, make referrals to YR attorneys or outside organizations, and help track long-term outcomes
  • Connect clients to YR’s policy reform campaigns and support their ongoing participation
  • Identify and prepare participants for speaking engagements and advocacy opportunities through intensive one-on-one coaching sessions
  • Create formal and informal mechanisms for YR clients and their families to provide input on YR’s policy agenda

 

Advance YR’s Systemic Reform Agenda by Working with the Director of Policy to:

  • Develop policy positions and strategy based on input from clients and staff
  • Organize campaign actions and activities (e.g., lobby visits, outreach events, Know Your Rights trainings, press conferences and rallies)
  • Monitor and track relevant local and state legislative policy activity
  • Develop relationships with local elected officials and their staff, including trips to Albany
  • Deliver testimony and prepare youth to deliver testimony before the City Council, state legislature, and other bodies
  • Build relationships with community-based organizations, service providers, funders, and academics
  • Represent YR on relevant coalitions and work groups 

 

Support YR’s Community Advocacy Work (Including Administrative and Miscellaneous Responsibilities)

  • Assist with communicating the impact of YR’s services to elected officials, donors, and other supporters
  • Assist Youth Represents efforts to obtain Certificates of Relief and Certificates of Good Conduct for clients, including:
    • Track and manage referrals in Salesforce, maintain consistent contact with client and assist with all stages of application
    • Assisting clients with collecting necessary documents
    • Attending courthouse visits with clients, where required
  • Fundraising support for YR’s policy reform work
  • File New York City and New York State lobbying reports
  • Miscellaneous administrative duties
  • Other duties as requested by Senior Management

 

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to criminal justice initiatives and racial and social justice movements
  • 2-3 years of experience working on criminal justice efforts, or social justice issues focused on black and brown people
  • 2-3 years of experience working with underprivileged communities, and preferably justice involved youth under 24 years of age
  • Experience delivering workshops to audiences of more than 10 attendees

  • Proficient public speaker
    • Strong research, analysis, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Familiarity and comfort with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
