What Shows Up?

Youth Represent’s mission is to help young people leave their arrest and conviction records behind. Sometimes, this means helping the young people we work with understand what’s on their record, what will show up in background checks, and what their rights are.

Today we’re excited to share What Shows Up on My Record? Created specifically for young people, this booklet explains the difference between public and private cases, the impact of New York’s Raise the Age law, and how to prepare for background checks for jobs, schools, and housing.

Just before we released the booklet, we were thrilled to update it to reflect that convictions for loitering for the purpose of prostitution will now be automatically sealed thanks to the incredible organizers and activists who won the repeal of the #WalkingWhileTrans ban. We look forward to more updates to this booklet as we work to pass more laws that decriminalize youth and expand opportunities for sealing records.

Please help us spread the word and share this resource with young people, colleagues, and friends. As always, youth 24 and under who need legal support can call our hotline (646-759-8088) or visit our website any time.

This publication was developed through a collaboration of Youth Represent and Valeria Mogilevich.
